Rambusch is a full service company of designers, craftspeople, artisans and machinists practicing in the decorative arts. For 119 years we have worked with the design community to enhance the experience of interior architecture through lighting, furnishings, stained glass, mosaic and restoration. We’ve been making and designing beautiful objects for over a century, and our heritage is our dedication to the visual environment. Understanding, planning, designing and executing the full scope of building arts, we offer a full range of services to architects, designers, clergy, committees, civic groups and individuals on projects of any size, working within any budget.

LED downlight fixtures can replace all existing Rambusch downlights, as well as most other brands, without removing the old trims. Our standard trims offer fast installation from above or below, and we offer multiple options for beamspreads, drivers and dimming protocols. Our Twist-Lok frames are reversible for wet construction or existing ceilings. Regarding LED retrofits, these very specific fixtures can be placed right onto an old Rambusch mounting system from above. This saves cutting and patching the ceiling, and eliminates the need to install new mountings and rework the ceiling. LED downlighting is exceptionally smooth, and available in a range of color temperatures and rendering indices to recapture the experience of traditional lighting, without replicating its cost.

These LED bracket and pendant fixtures mount on, or can be suspended from trusses or walls. They are the self-contained versions of our recessed LED downlight, but either side-mounted or hung where exposed luminaires are required, or where recess space is not available. For interior applications, drivers can be concealed within the housing or mounted remotely when space is a concern. The bracket mount attaches at any angle, from which the housing tilts 25˚ outward. The pendant canopy mounts on 0°- 60° slopes with standard stem lengths of 24" and 60". As with all Rambusch fixtures, custom lengths and other options are always available.

We can place more illuminating power in small fixtures than any other provider on the market. Built around our patented thermal management system, the flite™ line of architectural uplights delivers the high flux needed to finally make solid state uplighting effective. From our small, inconspicuous flitePak, to the large, high-flux uplights needed in public spaces, the flite™ system allows Rambusch to incorporate LED where it couldn’t fit before, and where it wasn’t powerful enough to be effective. Now that’s all changed, because we’re expanding flite™ into all of our of LED uplights.

But flite™ is not just uplighting; it’s a cutting edge technology that’s opened the door to incorporating high-flux LED illuminators into very tight chambers. Our exclusive approach to SSL cooling drastically reduces weight and bulk over typical passive radiation systems. It’s particularly useful on historical projects, because flite™ curtails the internal shadows often seen when historical glass shades are lamped with LED. It preserves the familiar inner glow that people expect. This frees lighting designers to design as they please, without having to accommodate the heft of ordinary heatsink solutions. Rambusch is eager to facilitate designers by reducing the thermal footprint of LED. By cutting out the hardware and maximizing the light, see where flite™ can take you.

Accent lighting is highly dependent on mounting location, so they’re often inaccessible. No problem. Small and efficient, Rambusch LED accent units are the perfect complement to an interior lighting scheme to add focus and direction without adding maintenance. They include built-in snoots for glare control, use very little power and generate minimal heat, so you can place them anywhere.

Engineered Lighting

Downlighting provides a visually, and numerically smooth spread of light from many possible overhead locations. Fixtures are typically placed far outside the normal field of view, and can provide general illumination without detracting from the aesthetics of the space. Downlight provides people with enough light to read, perform tasks, interact, and people-watch.

Interior architectural uplighting is available in a wide variety of indirect beam patterns. Fixtures are mounted to locate the lamp above sight lines; thus, the luminaires unobtrusively enhance a space while maintaining glare-free visual comfort. Varied beam patterns are available to address different architectural spaces.

Accent lighting highlights areas and objects to separate them from their background. Fixtures are mounted on either track or platforms. They are most often employed in multiples to properly render subjects for display and theatrical effects, cross-lighting to reduce shadowing.

Architects and engineers often adapt standard engineered products to accomplish their objectives. We can accommodate nearly any customized solution for any size project. Modifications to our basic platforms may involve any aspect of the lighting fixture including baffles, housings, mounting brackets, wall plates, special finishes, reflector arrangements and much more.

Wallwashers comprise a flexible family of optics, and are designed specifically to deliver visually smooth, controlled light patterns over wide areas. These fixtures are highly versatile, finding a myriad of uses in museums and gallery spaces.

Decorative Lighting

When clients need a lighting fixture to meet their unique criteria, we fabricate original Decorative fixtures to your specifications. Over the years we have implemented a vast array of fixture designs in all workable materials, housing light sources from flame to LED. Original fixtures can deliver more than one type of lighting from multiple hidden sources. New decorative fixtures can make a major statement, be concealed, or sit anywhere in between. From our design floor, metal and glass shops, Rambusch facilitates concept, experimentation, mock-ups, thermal and photometric testing, and Underwriters Laboratories (UL) approval … all prior to fabrication.

We maintain seven major UL files: LED – recessed and pendent/surface/bracket. LED listings cover single and multiple drivers. Incandescent – recessed, pendant/surface/bracket; HID – recessed, pendant/surface/bracket. Fluorescent – recessed, pendant/surface/bracket. Most Custom listings fall under these major luminaire type categories, so they meet the general scope for UL. We also hold 70+ UL sub-files, and can use these to fast-track listings of specific fixtures.

The comprehensive scope of our services in design and fabrication supports all our restoration projects, insuring the integrity of every fixture that passes through our hands. We are their stewards, and because we build new fixtures, we know exactly how to repair, restore and re-engineer sources such as LED into the old ones. Whether pristine or period, Rambusch can return any historic lighting fixture to any desired condition. In the process, we utilize our large private library and historical taxonomy to reference past work throughout the nation. We are well versed in the standards for the treatment of historic properties, employ formal conservation studies to document artifacts, and establish cleaning and preservation plans for historic surfaces prior to commencing work. Restoration does not end with fixture preservation, but can include on-site documentation and removal strategies, insured storage and crating, as well as safe delivery and experienced installation.

We can replicate entirely new lighting fixtures based upon your existing sample, archival drawings, photographs, and every form of evidence in between. Rambusch replications are exact copies, generally wrought using the same techniques and materials as the original. In some cases we’re asked to inconspicuously build in special sources and optics, or update basic components to exceed the functionality of the original. We have years of experience implementing LED, recreating the historical inner glow of incandescent fixtures. We can recreate any non-existent luminaire to exact appearances, to a specific period of time and historic location.

Through conferences, interviews and discussions, we work with Parish committees, architects and liturgical designers to help set definitions and scope on projects of any size. Whether a private chapel or some of the largest churches in the world, liturgical and financial goals must intersect and be mutually understood. Site visits, mockups, focus groups and questionnaires are just some of the tools we use to find consensus, setting solid foundations for successful outcomes faithful to the liturgy, and the community. Bringing multi-generational experience to our work, we provide oversight and management services for liturgical installations and renovations. We act on behalf of our clients as representatives for long, multi-year efforts to ensure stylistic continuity. Our whole approach is to reflect your congregation’s particular taste, personality and desires.

Rambusch has long produced furnishings and objects for worship, designing and shaping materials into symbolic and functional forms. From initial design to completed objects, we still weave the traditional thread of communicating ideas and iconographic richness through our work. Our artisans continue to create new furnishings and other central liturgical elements such as tabernacles, altars, ambos, fonts, candle stands and processional crosses. All unique to your tastes and needs; nothing is ever standard. We are often called upon to adapt our original works from decades past, or reclaim and recreate complete furnishing sets from stonework, doors, frames and other surviving pieces. Though our services, our clients have an exceptionally wide range of forms, materials, colors, textures and lighting effects to work with. By working closely with them to narrow down and use these effectively, we help them create truly communal and religious atmospheres that aid individuals in their personal practice of worship.

Stained Glass

A great stained glass window is the result of a three-fold collaboration between an architect or designer, client and glassworker. Good work depends on sharing ideas between these three. As glass artisans, we create new, beautiful windows while working with the client and their designer on budget, and providing recommendations for mechanics, proper framing, color distribution, and the dramatic possibilities inherent to the glass itself. Our artists’ focus is stained glass. They are well versed and educated in every technique necessary to produce exceptional results, with a library of imported glass at their fingertips. We can construct glass panels using wood, concrete, lead, zinc and copper. Whether highly figured or abstract, Rambusch crafts and installs sound windows of permanence.

Beyond broken glass, we remedy general deterioration issues such as buckling, broken lead cames and bindings, corrosion, failing support bars, hardened putty and simple buildup of dirt and grime. Often more harm than good will result if, in the name of restoration and improvement, leaded glass is handled improperly. That’s why we have conservators and abatement specialists at our disposal to help establish restoration priorities and test for hazardous materials. There are thousands of leaded windows in this country in need of repair. There are seemingly just as many considerations and alternatives. We have decades of experience working with the historic leaded and stained glass found in our public buildings. These walls of luminous color are found in libraries, courthouses and churches across the country. We support the growing interest in saving this part of our heritage through facilitating adaptive reuse, capital campaigns and public outreach.

Mosaic and Artwork

For design and installation of mosaic projects of any size, Rambusch handles the logistics that go into producing both small, and large-scale fabrication and installation. We plan, design and cartoon in our facility. Fabrication, andamento (the directional trend of the mosaic tiles), sectioning and projection (for compound curved surfaces) are performed under our close supervision in Italy, or in other studios nearby. This same, highly detailed process goes for any mosaic commission we undertake, from the smallest adornment, to the 90-ft gold dome of the National Shrine.

Over the decades, we have developed long-term relationships within the mosaic art communities. This valuable resource of talented, responsible individuals allows us to provide experienced craftspeople and specialists in many disciplines, all over the world. They execute our specific designs and work under our direct supervision. Our partnerships have been forged through many successful projects. For mosaic, painting and decorating or unique sculpture, our long-standing associates are steadfast resources to provide clients the benefits of greater design fabrication scope under Rambusch design management and supervision.

Mosaic is a delicate art that, by its very nature, is prone to deterioration if not cared for. As example, this is especially true of exterior mosaic panels. Since removal of most artworks can be disastrous, Rambusch is well positioned to service and repair existing mosaic in situ using our associated technicians who are trained to assess tile and mortar conditions, maintain, stabilize and document mosaic art. Even if one does not require repair and wholesale replacement of loose and missing tesserae, proactive maintenance is the most important step to conserving mosaic for future generations to enjoy. Rambusch is happy to provide consultation in the care, repair and restoration for many of the art forms found in liturgical and public settings.
