Project Summary:
The challenge: create a respectful memorial in a realistic style that would communicate the raw heroism of the NY firefighters who died on 9/11 and be a lasting tribute to firefighters who continue to risk their lives in the line of duty. Working closely with the Fire Department of the City of New York, Rambusch Studios designed, executed and lit a massive bas relief with the name and rank of every firefighter who perished that day.
Project Detail:
The FDNY Memorial Wall is an 8,000 pound, 56-foot-long by 6-foot high bas-relief in cast bronze, honoring those 343 active duty firefighters who were killed in service on September 11, 2001. The wall was conceived, designed and developed on behalf of a private donor by Rambusch Studios who were also responsible for project management and execution of the project. Rambusch artists produced the conceptual design and scale models used in the development of the final design. The design evolved in collaboration with members of the New York City Fire Department. It is permanently installed on the west wall of “Ten House,” FDNY Engine 10, Ladder 10. As defined by Chief Harold Meyers, FDNY Manhattan Borough Commander, the purpose of the Classical Realist composition was to depict every group, type of vehicle and apparatus used in responding that fateful day.
The FDNY wanted visitors to experience the memorial after sunset. Nine 4 -foot long handmade weatherproof picture lights conceal quartz sources and wallwashing units. The light from these fixtures reinforces the warmth of the burnished bronze, revealing the sculpted metal and highlighting focal points. Lutron Electronics donated a programmed dimming system so that the cherished memorial is bathed in light around the clock.
