Project Summary:
The Good Shepherd Chapel at Mount Calvary Cemetery was restored and then enhanced by the provision of mosaics, a stone altar, wooden liturgical furnishings and a marble floor.
Project Detail:
The Chapel of the Good Shepherd on the grounds of Mount Calvary Cemetery not only serves as the main chapel for internments in the cemetery but is also the site of crypts for the repose of Archbishops and Bishops of the Diocese of Wheeling-Charleston. The building serving these two important tasks was in need of restoration, enhancement with new furnishings and an overall upgrade.
A stunning mosaic image of the Good Shepherd from the crypt chapel of the Basilica of the National Shrine in Washington, DC was re-created to serve as the focal point of the Chapel and for the particular manifestation of Christ for which the Chapel is named. An altar of stone was created along with a fine cherry wood lectern and Presider’s chair. The flooring throughout was changed from a commercial ceramic tile to marble. A very special function was addressed – the potential to create crypts to accommodate the remains of future Diocesan leaders. The previous tombstone/crypt covers were respected, maintained and conserved. A grouping of patinated brass LED sourced multi-circuit lanterns was created to allow the space to be illuminated in programmed lighting scenes.
